A different Nancy Brown
Nancy BROWN b 17 May 1792 is on a Temple Index (TIB) as being our ancestor. My own research thus far, however, does not support this. I don't think this Nancy BROWN is ours; but I am including info on her so as to help keep things straight in OUR BROWN family. (Further research might reveal we are connected with these BROWNs. They have Mormon ties.) From Erold C. WISCOMBE we learn much about this Nancy BROWN. Since (1) some of our family have already claimed ties to this Nancy and (2) we still don't know for sure until we study some more, I've included much of WISCOMBE's information. I write it out instead of linking to it in case the link (of which I have no control) disappears. Here goes:
Nancy was born 29 May 1792, at Lick Creek, Rowan County, North Carolina. She is the daughter of James BROWN, Sr. & Mary (Polly) WILLIAMS Emerson. She is the third of nine children, all born in Rowan County, North Carolina:
1. Jane BROWN Hughes, b. 1784, married Michael HUGHES;
2. Mary (Polly) BROWN, b. 1789, sealed to James S. BROWN d. 1876;
3. ***Nancy BROWN Mills Newbury Critchlow b.1792; d. 1870;
4. Susan BROWN Jackson b.1793 md Sion JACKSON 26 Feb 1803;
5. Martha Patsy BROWN Boss b.1794 md. David BOSS;
6. Obedience "Aunt Biddie" BROWN Boss b.1799 md. Philip BOSS II in 1818;
7. William BROWN b.1796 or 7 md. Frances WARREN d. 1884;
8. Captain James BROWN Jr. b. Sept 30, 1801 md. Martha STEPHENS and twelve other wives d. 30 Sep 1863;
9. Daniel BROWN b.1804; md. Elizabeth STEPHENS 8 Oct 1823; d. 1875.
(***Nancy may have married William MILLS on 12 Dec 1815 & had a son, Hartwell Hunter MILLS about 1831. These dates seem unlikely but is being included here for further investigation. Hartwell married Martha WALTON. William MILLS died 1857 in Coosa, Alabama. William MILLS (b 1790) is of Elbert, Georgia.)
Nancy was living at the family farm in Rowan County with her sister Polly & brother Daniel when her father died 27 Mar 1823. On 1 Oct 1831 they moved to Brown County, Illinois, after two of their houses burned down. In 1840 Nancy converted LDS at Brown County. On 28 Sep 1840 her brother James Jr's wife (Martha STEPHENS) died giving birth to her ninth child. She is buried near Kingston, Adams, Illinois. James Jr. gave his infant son Moroni BROWN to his two unmarried sisters, Nancy and Polly, after the death of his first wife, Martha STEPHENS.
Nancy, Polly & Moroni moved to Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois, in 1842. Nancy married James Washington NEWBURY (1791-1884) at Nauvoo on 3 Oct 1843. James first married Mary SMITH but she died in 1842 at Nauvoo. James took a plural wife, Elizabeth HASKIINS, on 17 Nov 1845 and another, Sibyl PULSIFER on 22 Apr 1848. Nancy & James divorced soon afterward that. (James NEWBURY then married Edith A. BENEDICT on 14 Nov 1849 in Iowa. He left the church at Winter Quarters and later joined the Reorganized LDS church.)
Nancy received her patriarchal blessing from Hyrum SMITH on 31 Jan 1844 and was endowed in the Nauvoo Temple on 30 Jan 1846. Both of these happened while she was still in Nauvoo and married to James NEWBURY. Nancy, Polly & Moroni spent several years in Iowa. They appear on the 1850 census fo District 21, Pottawattamie. Polly is given as head of household at age 55. Using her maiden name is Nancy BROWN at age 53, below Polly. Next is Moroni, age 9. (Ages of the women appear younger than I think they were tho.) Living close by is their brother Daniel BROWN & his wife Elizabeth. Another brother, James Jr., had gone with the Mormon Battalion where he became Captain of Company C.
The rest of the family stayed a time at Winter Quarters then continued on the trek west. They arrived in Utah in 1951, settling in Brownsville (Ogden), Weber, Utah. Nancy lived there with her brother, Captain James BROWN, founder of that city, until his death 1 Sep 1863. James S. BROWN mentions meeting his two aunts, Mary Polly & Nancy, at Ogden in Jun 1853 when James returned from his mission to the Society Islands. On 6 Nov 1852 Nancy was sealed in the President's office to William Coe CRITCHLOW as a plural wife; but apparently Nancy continued to live with her nephew Moroni. She died 24 Dec 1870 at age 78. She appears on the Ogden City Cemetery records as Nancy BROWN, sister of Captain James BROWN.
On 7 May 1889 William Coe CRITCHLOW had her exhumed and moved to his lot in the same cemetery. His headstone refers to both of his "Beloved Wives", Hariet HAWKINS & Nancy BROWN. Nancy's sister Polly was sealed to her nephew, James Stephens BROWN on 31 Aug 1855. After Nancy died, Polly moved to Salt Lake City to live with Rebecca Ann McBRIDE, the second wife of James S. BROWN. Polly died at Salt Lake City, Utah in 1876 and is buried there in City Cemetery under the name of Mary (Polly) BROWN, wife of James S. BROWN.
The parents of this featured, Nancy BROWN, b 17 May 1792 are James BROWN Sr. & Mary WILLIAMS. Mary, b 1760, is the daughter of John WILLIAMS & Jane of Rowan (later Davidson) County, North Carolina. She first married John EMMERSON about 1779. They had two children: Margaret (married Thomas STILLWELL) & John CORNSTALK or COMSTOCK. John EMMESON was killed in the Revolutionary War. Mary Polly WILLIAMS Emmerson next married James BROWN Sr. They joined Jersey Baptist Church in 1797. Aound 1807 they attended the Tom's Creek Baptist Church. Mary & James BROWN had nine more children, all born in Rowan County, North Carolina (see above).
THANK YOU Erold C. WISCOMBE for such wonderful research!!!
