Not Born in 1792

Nancy BROWN Shelton was born abt 1811 & is the daughter of John BROWN & Nancy. She married our Stephen SHELTON (b. 1809) about 1825, probably in Missouri. I believe she is the unnamed female listed with Stephen on the U.S. 1830 Census for Harmony Township, Washington, Missouri (Pg 70), over 15 & under 20.

Several people seem to have 17 May 1792 as the birthday for either Nancy BROWN Shelton or for her mother, Nancy, wife of John BROWN. If Nancy's birth year is 1792, then she is not on the census with Stephen but another woman was. Since Mary Ann was born after the census, we know her mom was alive in 1830 and we'd presume living with Stephen. The 17 May 1792 is on a Temple Index (TIB) for a Nancy BROWN. I've seen it too. My conclusion after researching this is that it is yet another case where data gets mixed up.

I believe this info is from the family of James BROWN & Mary (Polly) WILLIAMS Emerson. They had a daughter, Nancy BROWN, born 29 May 1792 in Lick Creek, North Carolina. I think someone saw this Nancy in the TIB & mistakenly guessed she is ours. It might be an easy mistake for someone to make because this Nancy lived in Illinois (Brown County) with her sister, Mary (called Polly). Sound familiar? Nancy & Polly converted LDS in the early 1840s. The two sisters stayed in Nauvoo & then Iowa probably during the same time as Stephen SHELTON & so their lives were similar & it would be an easy mistake. The sisters never married & remained together. They are on the 1850 census in Iowa & eventually went west. Their brother, James, founded the City of Ogden, Utah.
