Two 1809 Stephens

It is helpful to look at data remembering that mistakes happen. I have copies of original documents as evidence that our Stephen was born 9 Mar 1809 in North Carolina. For the record, however, IT SEEMS THERE WERE TWO STEPHENs born in North Carolina in 1809 so be cautious. Information about one person sometimes gets mixed with that of another.

The other Stephen (NOT ours) married Susannah ERGLE(?). His family appears on the U.S. Census of 1850 & 1860 in Habersham County, Georgia. Our Stephen is identified with SH-10 in the Shelton DNA Project. The Habersham County Stephen, identified with SH-59, is clearly a different line. The SH-59 Stephen had a son named Robert. There was a Robert SHELTON on the Trail of Tears. Our Stephen had ties to the Cherokee Nation; however, we do not know of any ties between a Robert & our Stephen.

Exact Death Date Found

Our Stephen died 22 Aug 1855 in Provo, Utah. His funeral & burial were the following day. I was excited to find the exact day recorded in the journal of Bishop Jonathan Oldham DUKE of the Provo (Utah) First Ward, written in 1855. Our Stephen's parents are Stephen SHELTON (b. abt 1790) & Elizabeth (b. abt 1792). The Provo City (Utah) Cemetery record of our Stephen (b. 1809) says he was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina. While this is possible, it is not proven.

Sebert (Seibert) Crutcher SHELTON

Some folks have mixed the records of Stephen SHELTON (b. 1809) with Sebert (Seibert) Crutcher SHELTON. Sebert lived in Missouri at the same time as Stephen &, like Stephen, converted Mormon. Sebert was in the Mormon Battalion. As best as I can determine, Stephen wasn't. (Altho Pioneers & Prominent Men of Utah says he did.) Most records showing S. C. SHELTON, I believe, refer to Sebert, not Stephen. Of note, however, is a transcription of a Nauvoo Temple record (of OUR Stephen) which says Stephen C. SHELTON. I have only seen that name once; and I have not yet been able to examine the original record, just the typed transcript. Still some unanswered questions here. As and addendum, one researcher-type distant relative uses the "C" in her records when referring to our Stephen. She told me she based this upon the Nauvoo record.
