Probably Indian
The more likely version of the horse-trading story (see CPJB Index on left) is the Indian version, not the Gypsy version. It really doesn't matter. Still,
I’m still hoping someone will give me the source of the Sioux info I seek on Nancy BROWN Shelton (b. abt 1811). I have not had any luck with that specific item. But I’ve still made a little progress thanks to other things folks have shared. God bless them! Even little clues help.
I ended my first research phase with the question of Indian or Gypsy. A couple of folks wrote that their families were taught to hide their Native American roots. That is helpful to know because it strengthens my thinking that the Gypsy version was a “cover-up” as the story passed thru strong anti-Indian timeframes. I also learned that “the present populations of North American Gypsies and Travelers date from immigrations of 1850 and thereafter”. More reason to suspect a cover-up, my story took place many years before that.
