  • WARDLE, Lucy Ann (1885), biography Lucy Ann WARDLE was born 28 Feb 1885 in Vernal, Utah. She is the daughter of Edwin Ralph WARDLE & Elizabeth Orinda THOMPSON. Lucy married Stephen Bonner SHELTON on 29 Mar 1905. She died 23 Apr 1946. Lucy is the sister of my grandmother, Fannie Adelia WARDLE who married Stephen Morton SHELTON.

  • WASHBURN, Cephas (& Mrs. Washburn, Miss Minerva Washburn). 1793 to 1860. He was a noted Christian missionary and educator who worked with the Indians of northwest Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma.   • WESTERN CHEROKEE. The Keetoowah or Old Settlers began migrating into northern Arkansas and southeastern Missouri after the French defeat by the British in 1763. They were given land by the Spanish. By 1782 additional, proBritish Cherokee joined them. More Chickamauga followed abt 1794-99. By the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, war between the Cherokee & Osage was common. Migration continued. There were about 2,000 Cherokee in northern Arkansas by 1808.
