  • APPLANALP, Peter was in the Uintah Basin in 1894. He confirmed (my grandpa) Stephen Morton SHELTON's LDS membership. The family story is that Peter was the only one to survive an avalanche that wiped out his village. Baby Peter came down in his cradle, gliding on top of the snow. The people who found him did not know his name and called him "Applanalp" which means one who came from the mountain. Someone who knows the Swiss language can please correct me if this is wrong. Thanks!

  • AZTEC. The Aztec, in 1519, had been repeatedly called upon to put down revolts of tribes in outlying areas, an effort which drained the strength of their kingdom. This was unfortunate timing. Hernando CORTEZ landed at Vera Cruz, then fought his way to Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), which was a splendid complex of municipalities, lakes and canals. MONTEZUMA, emperor of the Aztecs, welcomed CORTEZ, thinking he was QUETZELCOATL, the great white bearded God who was expected to return. CORTEZ took MONTEZUMA as his prisoner. The Muskogee lived in a separate province in the northwestern part of Mexico. Hitherto invincible in war, they now rallied to MONTEZUMA's aid. Forces from many parts of the great Aztec empire united with the Muskogee in an attempt to exterminate the invaders. Great battles esued. The Spaniards and the Aztecs fought so furiously that Montezuma was mortally wounded by his own subjects. Eventually, the Aztecs were entirely subdued by CORTEZ. What followed was horrible slaughter, plunder and desecration. MONTEZUMA was dead; his government was overthrown; and thousands of his subjects were put to the sword. It should also be mentioned hat CORTEZ's troops were aided in their takeover by reinforcements from the West Indies and from many Indian groups who hated the Aztecs because of their cruelty. For many years CORTEZ governed Mexico, then called New Spain. Unwilling to live in a country conquered by foreign assassins, the Muscogee determined to seek some other land. They abandoned their homes, moving eastward until they struck the sources of the Red River. They eventually reached & crossed the Ohio & Tennessee rivers and settled upon the Yazoo. It is said that here they dwelled for several years in health and tranquility. But even in this remote retreat they eventually encountered those who would molest them.
