Dan River Shelton DNA

Our Shelton line of interest is that of Stephen SHELTON, b. 1809 in NC, who first married Nancy BROWN and second married Abigail HARRIS. DNA sample from this line was given by Leonard Aaron SHELTON (b. 1914). Leonard Aaron SHELTON is the son of Stephen Morton SHELTON (b. 1877) & Fannie Adelia WARDLE. Stephen Morton SHELTON is the son of John SHELTON (b. 1839) & Mary MORTON. John SHELTON is the son of Stephen SHELTON (b. 1809) & Abigail HARRIS. Stephen SHELTON is the son of Stephen SHELTON (b. abt 1780) and Elizabeth (b. abt 1782). We know nothing about this family prior to this except for Native American ties.

In the Shelton DNA Study, Stephen SHELTON's line is represented as SH-10 which falls into the "Dan River" group. However, we still do not know how. Unfortunately, the closest matches to any of the SHELTONs in the case study are three 34 out of 37 markers. We are presently having SH-10 sample upgraded to 67 markers. The "Interpreting Genetic Distance" matrix tells us:

She has done an excellent job with her page. She has spent countless hours in this endeavor, for which we graciously thank her. What follows are research notes on the Dan River Shelton DNA group. Credit to Tina Hall and also to a yet unknown author (photocopied pages from unknown origin) on the Dan River Sheltons. (***Joseph SHELTON was landowner in Halifax Co., VA in 1758. Possible brother to Wm of Dan River.)

• William (of Dan River) SHELTON, b. abt Feb 1742 d. 1794 Pittsylvania, VA. No known siblings. From Tina Hall: "William has been linked to Ralph and Mary Shelton lines via their son, Crispin, however when comparing their DNA we find that this is not the case." Apparently Crispin's will and the lawsuit which followed the probate (plus other documentation) also invalidate the alleged link to Crispin.
  
  Eight of William's nine known children are listed in a land document showing where they all sold their inherited land to their brother, Josiah, in 1803. The only child not listed in this document is their sister, Agnes. Agnes named her firstborn son "William Shelton Arnett". Names of children given in two deeds. On 6 Dec 1802 (recorded 20 Jun 1803), Pitt. Deeds 13:320: William SHELTON Jr., George SHELTON, Susanna HAMMONDS, Ephraim RUSSELL and wife Elizabeth & Henry HOILER and wife Anna, all of Pittsylvania, sold to Josiah SHELTON of the same county their claim or interest in land on the north side of Dan River "whereupon Hannah SHELTON now lives it being all our part or parts of land which may or shall fall to us from the estate of William SHELTON, Dec'd." George ADAMS, William ROSS, Jeffry GIBSON were witnesses.
  
  On 13 Aug 1803 (recorded 16 Jan 1804: Pitts. Deeds 13:538) John SHELTON and Elijah SHELTON sold to Josiah SHELTON their interest in the same land with similar wording in the deed. John and Elijah were "of the City of Rockingham, NC." (recorded 21 Jun 1813), Deed Book 18 page 271, 12 Dec 1812, Joseph and Agnes ARNETT grant to Josiah SHELTON. (Line of SH-52)

Court Orders 7:313) Lineage can be traced back to England; dau. of John (of Dan River) YATES III (b. abt 1715 VA) and Elizabeth KILGORE as shown in the Pitts. will of John YATES 24 Oct 1777, probated 3 Sep 1778 & the will of Elizabeth YATES 3 Sep 1793, probated 21 Sep 1795.
