Updated 15 Jun 2010. The term "Dan River" was coined to identify a group of similar samples in the Shelton DNA Study Group (under guidance from Family Tree DNA). Our specific strain is represented by the sample called "SH-10". Check out the pink group in Tina Hall's Shelton "DNA Test Results" page. Donor for SH-10 is Leonard A. SHELTON (b. 1914).

Leonard Aaron Shelton SH-10

  1. Leonard Aaron SHELTON is the son of Stephen Morton SHELTON (b. 1877) & Fannie Adelia WARDLE.
  2. Stephen Morton SHELTON is the son of John SHELTON (b. 1839) & Mary MORTON.
  3. John SHELTON is the son of Stephen SHELTON (b. 1809) & Abigail HARRIS.
  4. Stephen SHELTON is the son of Stephen SHELTON (b. abt 1785) and Elizabeth (b. abt 1787). We know nothing about this family prior to this except for Native American ties.

In the Shelton DNA Study Stephen SHELTON's line (represented as SH-10) falls into the "Dan River" group; however, we do not yet know exactly how. We match 35 out of 37 markers with another tester from Texas (not yet assigned a SH number). We also have three other testers matching 34 out of 37 markers. We are presently awaiting having the SH-10 sample compared to other testers with 67 markers. For now the "Interpreting Genetic Distance" matrix tells us:

We are POSSIBLY related to the SH-06 line (of William SHELTON & Hannah YATES).
We are PROBABLY related to the SH-14 line (of Eli SHELTON & Elizabeth WEATHERS).
We are PROBABLY related to the SH-52 line (of William SHELTON & Hannah YATES).
We are related to the SH-70 line (of William SHELTON & Lydia PARKER). Upgraded test to 67 loci shows 65 out of 67 matches.
We are related to the SH-71 line (of William SHELTON & Hannah YATES thru son John & grandson Wm Spencer.
We are related to the SH-90 line (of William SHELTON & Lydia PARKER).
We are related to the SH-?? (not yet assigned) line (of Thomas SHELTON & Catherine MUNDAY).

This will make more sense after you examine the pink items in Tina HALL's Shelton "DNA Test Results" page. Tina is represented as SH-06 of the Dan River Shelton group. She has done an excellent job with her page. We graciously thank Tina for the countless hours she has spent in this endeavor. We also thank Margaret SHELTON in her efforts as the study group coordinator.

We're related to whom???

So near and yet so far! DNA has helped handfulls of people learn they have common ancestors. That's a wonderful thing! However, it's still up to us to determine just how we are related. How are we related to William & Hannah YATES Shelton? How are we related to William & Lydia PARKER Shelton? Who is the common ancestor tying all the group participants together? The answer is yet to be determined.

What about Thomas & Catherine MUNDAY Shelton? Much thought went into whether this couple dare even be mentioned in a discussion about Dan River Sheltons. The ancestor couple for this line as submitted is Charles & Mattie RUCKER Shelton. Further research is needed, always. Meanwhile, efforts so far on this line seem to run up to Thomas & Catherine MUNDAY Shelton. Reports of findings of this work will be made available.
