Introduction:  Nancy BROWN is the first wife of my second great grandfather, Stephen SHELTON (b 1809). I descend from his second wife, Abigail HARRIS, but am studying Nancy in hope of finding clues about my SHELTON line.

Nancy Brown is the daughter of John BROWN & Nancy. Some in the family say she is the daughter of the John BROWN who was head of the Cherokee Old Settlers in 1838. I estimate Nancy's birth to be about 1811. She maried Stephen SHELTON (b 1809) abt 1825. The female 15-20 yrs old on the 1830 census for Harmony, Washington, Missouri (Pg 70), I would suppose is Stephen's wife, Nancy. The census reveals this female was born between 1810-1815. Knowing her daughter, Mary Ann, was not born until 1831 increases the likelihood of the adult female on the census as being our Nancy. Since Mary Ann was born after the census, we know her mom was alive in 1830 & is presumed living with Stephen. She is not the same Nancy born 17 May 1792. Nancy was mixed blood Indian. Like her mother, she was proficient in herbal medicines.
