Introduction: P14 Samuel THOMPSON was born 13 Feb 1812 in Newport, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth UNKNOWN. Elizabeth died giving birth to their daughter, Elizabeth Orinda. Samuel died 14 Mar 1901 in Midway, Utah.
I've never researched her before now. With my immediate objective being to write up the story of the two babies born a day apart who ended up marrying each other..... I found I had little documentation outside of family records to support this. I don't mean I doubt it happened; I only mean I don't find supporting information within the pioneer records. Especially frustrating is in researching our Thompsons. While I did manage to determine the Samuel who was in the Mormon Battalion was not ours, I concurrently came to realize both of these Samuels were close in age; and I would need to be extra careful as I sought information to determine which info was ours.
Our Samuel THOMPSON is on the 1850 census for Utah County. He appears to be single and raising three children. It shows that he is 37 yrs old & born in Kentucky. There is a Jane listed, age 11, born in Illinois. There is an Adam listed, age 5, born in Iowa. Now, nobody but us would probably pick up on this next entry had we not had a bit of inside supplemental info. Ancestry.com has Samuel's youngest (our ELIZABETH ORINDA THOMPSON, the baby born on the plains of Wyoming) listed as "Trinda Thompson, b abt 1848 in Indiana. I looked at the scropted copy and the name is probably recorded as Irinda. But as for the Indiana part......... it clearly (to me) says her place of birth is "Indian Territory". No wonder folks get confused...... An interesting observation I'll pass on also is that our Samuel was living next door to Melvin Ross in Utah County in 1850. I found record of George & Fannie WARDLE migrating in 1848; but not sure yet about Thompson. I have not yet found the company Samuel was in. They actually broke into smaller groups under a major company name. Clearly some names are missing also. Still looking. Just thought I'd share. Be careful when folks transcribe from original records. I almost missed Betsy Orinda.
Fondly,
Cousin Sheila
